One of the fastest steamy hot food you can hurriedly make whenever you’re hungry and tired is noodles. Instant Noodles are eaten across the globe as a fast food, street food, or even workplace food or in fact, outdoor food. Don’t get me wrong, it can also be eaten indoor as a family meal. It is one of the most often-consumed foods in the world, including Nigeria. Many people of all ages and stages of life eat noodles— it’s for everyone. Young people eat it the most. 

In Nigeria, Indomie is the most popular brand of instant noodles and the first to hit the Nigerian market. It has become so popular that even other instant noodles brands here in Nigeria are often referred as Indomie. Indomie has become a generic name for instant noodles in Nigeria.

The production of Indomie in Nigeria started in 1995 but the brand was first introduced to the world in 1972.

The Indomie brand is widely distributed and consumed throughout the continents of  Asia, Europe Africa, and America. It is also popular in Middle Eastern countries too and the UAE. 

The way instant noodles are prepared consumed are often distinct, which makes it a delectable dish often craved by many people on a daily basis. In fact, in my opinion, more than a thousand cartons of Indomie are consumed across Nigeria everyday. Although brands are also widely consumed too, which makes indomie one of the most consumed commodities in Nigeria.

People eat instant noodles for the following reasons:

  • It’s quick to prepare
  • It’s a fast steamy hot food
  • It’s delicious when made with other ingredients like eggs and capsicums
  • It gives the urgent energy needed on the go

    You should know that Instant Noodles are processed carbs made of flour, high amount of salt, sugar, and other chemical substances which may be quite harmful to the body. Highly processed carbs are less nutritious to be body and are prone to harm a weak immune system. Instant noodles may be harmful to the body if the following is done:

    • Eaten raw
    • Eaten too often (making it a daily meal).


    Although, eating noodles may be irresistible when it comes as fast food in outdoor events, work place food, street food, or even a quick meal. However, it becomes harmful when eaten too often—on a daily basis.

    Noodles would not be harmful if the following is done:

    • Complemented with protein

    According to the Codex Standards for the production of instant noodles, the production of instant noodles are rooted from chemical ingredients like: flavour enhancers, acid regulators, flour treatment agents, humectants, emulsifiers, colours, thickeners, anti-caking agents, stabilisers and preservatives. All these elements are of a typical noodles. Also most brand of noodles contain the following:

    • Wax: Most noodles we ear today contain wax which is quite harmful to the body. Manufactures  add wax to the noodles so as to prevent it from sticking together after cooking. The wax will be noticed when boiling water is poured upon the raw noodles
    • Sodium: Noodles generally are high in sodium (salt), which is the course of many terminal  like cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney diseases, stroke, etc.

      Daily consumption of instant noodles may affect proper digestion and can cause bloating and irregular bowel movements.
